The market for flash-based and hard-disk drive (HDD)-based portable audio players will more than double in the next five years, from 140 million units in 2005 to 286 million by 2010. Apple’s iPod music player continues to dominate the rapidly growing MP3 player market as the survey also showed that nearly 50 percent of MP3 player owners had an iPod, representing a strong installed base. Apple’s iPod has been the top selling MP3 player in the US, garnering nearly 80 percent market share in March and leading by a wide margin in several international markets, such as UK, Japan, Australia, and Canada.

Apple’s reports about financial results for its fiscal 2006 second quarter ended April 1, 2006, showed that the big company’s revenue was of $4.36 billion and a net quarterly profit of $410 million, or $.47 per diluted share. In the year-ago quarter, Apple’s revenue was of $3.24 billion and a net profit of $290 million, or $.34 per diluted share. Apple shipped 1,112,000 Macintosh computers and 8,526,000 iPod music players during the quarter, representing 4 percent growth in Macs and 61 percent growth in iPods over the year-ago quarter.

Good news for people who doesn’t have an iPod but they wish they would. Apple profits soared on the back of a continuing growth in sales and they said that the prices for iPod music players might come down. The company said that they sold more than 8.5 million of the digital music players in the last three months - a 61% rise - and profits had rocketed by 41%. Apple Computer Inc. expects the average selling price of its iPod digital music player to decline in the current quarter from the prior period. Apple’s Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer said that they expect them to be down a little bit in the June quarter.
